Many factors are involved that reduce the life expectancy of dental implants, such as oral hygiene, general health, habits such as smoking, grinding, etc. The superstructure or dental implant extensions may need to be replaced after five years. Depending on the dental implant system used, some parts may need to be replaced annually, or sooner, because of wear or deterioration. These time frames are generalities. The dental profession continues to strive for long-term durability of dental implant dentures.

Implant Facts

Optimum tooth replacement is achieved with implants. Implants are root replacements. Once implanted into your jaw, the bone and the implant body integrate into one cohesive member and provide a stable and reliable anchor on which a tooth may be fabricated. Implant bodies are also employed as retention abutments used in retaining full or partial dentures. In studies, dental implants are shown to preserve bone and reduce gum tissue loss. Eating, speech and laughter can now be performed with confidence. Patients feel better and gain a new found zest for life, as implants are the closest thing to natural teeth.

A personalized precision denture is made to suit each persons individual looks and needs using additional measurements of your face and jaw. Additional measurements assure a more precise function in relation to the movements of your jaw. Your prosthesis is handcrafted to match your age, complexion and facial features. Considerations such as the shape of your jaw line, lips, eyes, eyeglasses and hair color are noted. The teeth are set to produce a pleasing smile. Additional procedures are incorporated in the construction of your denture to closely mimic the movements of your jaw. High quality teeth are used in the construction of your dentures to insure a definitive outcome of the highest quality. A precision denture provides excellent function, fit, comfort and appearance.

New dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them. The dentures may feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in place. It is not unusual to experience minor irritation or soreness. You may find that saliva flow temporarily increases. As your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures, these problems should diminish. One or more follow-up appointments with the dentist are generally needed after a denture is inserted. If any problem persists, particularly irritation or soreness, be sure to consult your dentist.

Will dentures make me look different?

Dentures can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that little change in appearance will be noticeable. Dentures may even improve the look of your smile and help fill out the appearance of your face and profile.
